A sail does not die all at once
No one remembers the day their sail stopped being fast. There is no tear, no precise moment: there is only a feeling that builds up season after season. The boat seems to have less bite upwind, the mainsail struggles to close, you have to sheet on harder to reach the same trim you once had. This is sail decay, and for most sailors it remains an impression that is hard to bring into focus.
The trouble is that the decline is slow and the eye grows used to it. A sail loses shape gradually, and we unconsciously adapt our adjustments to compensate. When we finally replace it, the difference against the new sail takes us by surprise: «I had no idea I was sailing this badly». The point is that we had no yardstick to notice it sooner.
What really happens to a sail as it ages
A sail is not a rigid sheet: it is a tensioned aerodynamic surface, designed to a precise profile. With use, the fibres of the cloth stretch, the seams give imperceptibly, the resin that stiffens the laminate cracks. The result is always the same: the designed shape deforms.
The aerodynamic symptoms of decay are recognisable:
- The draft moves aft. The point of maximum camber, which on a new sail sits around 40-45% of the chord, migrates towards the leech. A «baggy» sail with the draft set back generates more heel and less useful drive.
- The trailing edge opens or flutters. The leech loses tension and can no longer carry the flow all the way to the end.
- The sail becomes fuller than it should be. The overall draft increases and the range shrinks: the sail «closes up» its draft in progressively lighter winds.
- Repeatability drops. The same adjustment gives different results, because the cloth responds less predictably to load.
All of these phenomena have a measurable consequence: they change the way aerodynamic pressure is distributed across the sail’s surface. And that is exactly what SailSensor observes.
The pressure signature of a tired sail
Every sail, at a given point of sail and in a given wind condition, produces a characteristic pressure distribution — a kind of aerodynamic fingerprint. The pressure sensors applied to the surface capture its shape: where the load is greatest, how it falls away towards the trailing edge, how sharp the entry is.
A new, well-cut sail shows a pressure peak near the entry and a progressive, orderly fall towards the leech. An aged sail tells a different story: the peak is further aft and less defined, the integrated total pressure — that is, the overall drive — falls for the same wind, and in the zones where the leech gives way anomalous drops appear. Comparing today’s signature with that of two seasons ago, the difference is no longer an impression: it is a different curve.
A sail does not lose speed all at once: it loses shape one gram at a time. Pressure is the first place that gram shows up.
The Sail Age Index: from data to trend
Measuring a single session says little; the value comes from comparison over time. That is why the sessions recorded with SailSensor flow into the analysis app, where they are normalised by condition — wind strength, point of sail, air density — so that outings made on different days can be compared.
On this basis the app builds a Sail Age Index: a synthetic metric that sums up how far the current pressure signature departs from that of the sail «at its best». It is not an abstract number but a trend: a curve that, session after session, shows whether and how quickly the sail is losing shape. A regression on the historical data turns dozens of outings into a line you can read at a glance, complete with a projection.
It is the same principle used to keep tabs on the wear of any critical component: you do not wait for failure, you watch the drift. A sail that moves out of its optimal range signals it well in advance — and with a measurement, not a doubt.
When it pays to replace (or merely re-cut) a sail
The question «is it time to change the mainsail?» carries weight, because a new sail is an investment. Deciding on feel leads to two opposite errors, both costly: changing it too soon, throwing away seasons of still-good performance, or keeping it too long, racing with a chronic disadvantage that no adjustment can recover.
An objective index helps you choose with judgement:
- Limited, slow decay: the sail is still competitive; it is worth carrying on with it and perhaps saving the new one for the important regattas.
- Marked but localised decay: often a visit to the sailmaker — a tweak to the leech, a recovery of the profile — brings the sail back into its window without replacing it.
- Widespread, accelerating decay: when the trend points downwards and does not stabilise, the cost of a new sail pays for itself in recovered performance.
The same method also lets you compare two sails of the same type — for example deciding which mainsail to take to a regatta — on measured grounds rather than the memory of how it felt last time.
From feeling to curve
Sail decay has always existed; what was missing was a way to see it before it became obvious. The sailor’s sensitivity remains irreplaceable, but memory is short and tends to normalise the decline. Measured pressure, on the other hand, does not forget: it records what the sail was like a year ago and compares it, without indulgence, with what it is today.
