The real wind for the boat's true polar

SailSensor Wind is the wireless wind sensor that provides the real wind data needed to build the boat's true polar: not a theoretical design polar, but one measured on the water, outing after outing. A wireless BLE anemometer, it talks to the SailSensor app with no cabling.

From data to the boat's performance polar

By cross-referencing the real wind, the pressure on the sail and the boom angle, the SailSensor app builds the boat's personalised performance polars: real performance curves that tell you, for every wind angle and strength, how the boat is truly performing.

It is not the shipyard's theoretical polar: it is the polar of your boat, with your crew and your settings. This way the data stops being scattered numbers and becomes repeatable knowledge, to compare outing after outing and understand where and how to improve.

How it works

The wireless wind sensor measures the wind and transmits the data to the app via BLE, with no cabling to run on board. Together with SailSensor Pressure and SailSensor BoomAngle, it feeds the calculation of the boat's real polar in real time.

Real wind, wireless

A wireless anemometer that detects the wind and sends it to the app via BLE, with no cables or invasive installations on board.

Feeds the true polar

The real wind data is the ingredient that, together with pressure and boom angle, makes it possible to build the polar measured on the water.

Repeatable knowledge

The performance curves by angle and wind turn every outing into an objective comparison, to repeat and improve.

From the sensors to the app

The wind data flows into the SailSensor app for Android (iOS version in development), which combines it with pressure and boom angle to draw the boat's real polar and the navigation telemetry. Sessions can be stored to review your outings and follow how performance evolves over time.

With SailSensor Bridge the same data can be brought onto the boat's NMEA 2000 network.

Frequently asked questions

What is a boat's real polar?

It is the boat's performance curve built from the data measured while sailing — the speed reached for every combination of wind angle and strength — and not calculated on the drawing board at the design stage. The real polar describes how the boat actually goes, with its crew and its settings.

Why do you need a wind sensor to build the polar?

The polar relates the boat's speed to the angle and strength of the real wind. Without a reliable wind reading it is not possible to place the performance correctly on the curve. SailSensor Wind provides that real wind data, wirelessly, directly to the app.

Which app does it work with?

With the SailSensor app for Android (the iOS version is in development). The app receives the wind data via BLE and, together with SailSensor Pressure and SailSensor BoomAngle, builds the boat's personalised performance polars.

Is SailSensor Wind a weather station or a boat monitoring system?

No. SailSensor is not a weather station, a security or a tracking system: it is a racing instrument that measures the real wind to build the boat's true polar and improve performance. See the disambiguation FAQ.
