Why maintenance isn't a minor detail
A pressure sensor is a measuring instrument, not just an accessory: its usefulness depends entirely on the quality and repeatability of the data it returns. A dirty, poorly stored or uncalibrated sensor can keep "working" in the sense that it lights up and transmits a number, but that number can silently drift away from reality. The difference between a reliable reading and a misleading one often comes down to a few minutes of maintenance before and after each outing.

Cleaning after every outing
The first, most immediate step is cleaning. After every sail the sensors have been exposed to salt spray and, in some cases, a bit of deck grime. Salt in particular is a silent enemy: it settles, crystallizes and over time can interfere with the magnetic contacts and the measuring surfaces.
Rinse the sensors with fresh water as soon as possible after your outing, then dry them with a soft cloth before storing them. Avoid solvents or harsh detergents: fresh water and a cloth are enough.
Thanks to the magnetic mounting with no holes or glue, this takes only a few seconds: unclip the sensor pairs from the sail, rinse, dry, store. It's the same routine most sailors already follow when rinsing shrouds or running rigging after a day offshore.
Calibration: what it is and why the data stays reliable
Calibration, or zeroing, is the operation that ensures the sensor starts from a correct reference point. Over time, with use and temperature changes, any pressure sensor can show a small drift, a minor deviation from the true zero. This isn't a defect: it's a physical characteristic of any sensor of this type, which is why periodic calibration is part of the instrument's normal life cycle.
Correct calibration is what makes it possible to compare data from one outing to the next. Without this step, the absolute pressure value loses its meaning: what really matters for trim is being able to trust that "10" today means the same thing as "10" did last week.

When to recalibrate the sensors
You don't need to calibrate before every single outing, but there are moments when recalibration should always be carried out:
After a knock or a drop — if a sensor has been hit hard or dropped, it's good practice to check the zero before trusting its readings again.
At the start of the season — after a long winter in storage, with temperature and humidity swings, a verification calibration is always advisable.
When switching sails — if you move the sensors onto a very different fabric in terms of thickness or stiffness, a fresh zero check removes any doubt.
If the readings look "off" — values that don't match what you feel on the helm are often the first sign that it's worth checking calibration before doubting your trim.
Battery and charging: the care that extends sensor life
As with any portable electronic device, battery management is also part of maintenance. Being able to remove the sensors after every outing, one of the benefits of magnetic mounting, lets you charge them calmly on land instead of leaving them mounted and subject to slow discharge and prolonged exposure to sun and salt.
A good practice is to recharge the sensors after every significant outing, even if the remaining battery seems enough for next time: always starting with a full charge eliminates an entire category of surprises at the dock, exactly when you have the least time to deal with them.
The 4-step start-of-season ritual
Before the first launch of the season, it's worth spending a few extra minutes on a more thorough check than your weekly routine:
Deep clean
Rinse each sensor thoroughly and check that the magnetic contacts are free of salt residue or corrosion.
Visual check
Inspect the housing, seals and measuring surfaces: any signs of wear should be caught before they become a problem at sea.
Zero calibration
Run the app-guided calibration procedure, with the sensors connected and no pressure on the sail.
Dockside test
Power on the system, check pairing with the app and confirm each pair is transmitting consistent data before you hoist.
