The number everyone adjusts and nobody measures
Every sailor adjusts the boom angle dozens of times per outing: sheeting on, playing the traveller, easing in the gusts. Yet hardly anyone can say what angle the boom is actually at at any given moment. It is set by eye, by feel, against a reference on the coachroof or a notch on the traveller track — and the next day, in the same breeze, you start again from scratch.
It is a paradox: the boom is the main lever we use to govern the mainsail — it sets the profile’s angle of attack relative to the wind — yet it is also the only fundamental adjustment on board with no dedicated instrument. Wind, speed, leeway: everything is measured. Boom angle is not.
Why boom angle matters so much
The angle between the boom and the boat’s centreline defines the mainsail’s angle of attack, that is, how hard the profile is working relative to the flow. A few degrees change everything:
- Close-hauled, a boom pinned too close to the centreline chokes the flow and increases heel; too far out, and you give away height. The useful window is a few degrees wide.
- On the downwind legs, the optimum angle depends on wind and sea state, and bringing it back to the right value after a gybe is a matter of performance, not aesthetics.
- In a gust, the ease-and-trim sequence has a precise return point: without a measurement, every recovery is an approximation.
The top teams have known it for a long time: in the grand-prix classes boom angle is among the data recorded and analysed after every outing. The problem is that until now it took full-budget yacht instrumentation: sensors wired into the gooseneck, processing units, calibrations.
How a wireless boom angle sensor works

What you actually do with it
The value of the data is not the number itself, but the repeatability it makes possible:
- Finding the trim that works, again. If in today’s conditions the boat was fast with the boom at a certain angle, that setting can be noted and reproduced — tomorrow, or at the next regatta in the same wind.
- Correlating angle and performance. Crossing the boom angle with the pressure distribution over the mainsail and with boat speed shows which combination produces the best drive, point of sail by point of sail.
- Making manoeuvres objective. After tacks and gybes, returning to the reference trim is no longer an estimate: it is a value to hit.
- Training the crew. The trimmer sees the effect of each adjustment in real time: a teaching tool that shortens the learning curve.
From the mark on the coachroof to recorded data
The felt-pen mark on the traveller track has served generations of racers, and it will go on doing so. But a mark cannot be logged, cannot be compared between outings, cannot be correlated with that day’s wind. A measured angle can: it enters the session, gets reviewed ashore, becomes accumulated experience instead of memory.
